Someone needs to teach this child to sleep!

August 29, 2010

It’s 9:15pm and I’ve just left my daughter. She’s still awake, but I got her to agree to let me leave the room. She has never been a great sleeper, but she’s recently taken a HUGE backslide. I had her to the point where I could finish the evening routine and then leave her awake in her room. She’d whine a bit and then hit the hay, and usually the show would be over by just after 8. But NOW – I’m pulling my hair out.

We leave her. The deal is 20 min quiet time then lights out. Except now in that 20 minutes she’ll disassemble her entire room, and be in no mood to stop for lights out. I’m not freaked out about the mess (believe me, if you’ve seen my house you know that’s not the issue) I just don’t understand where this restlessness is coming from. If we ignore her she’ll stay up for hours. Seriously. Funny enough, next day she always seems to have a fabulous nap at daycare *sigh*

We turn out the lights, she turns them back on. We put her to bed, she’ll cry at the gate (we use a baby gate rather than shutting the door). So far my solution is to go in and lay my head on the bed beside her, tell her to close her eyes and take deep breaths. Most of the time she’ll grab me in something that resembles a headlock. I bargain with her, try to calm her down and tell her that when she’s calm she has to tell me I can leave. Usually this just results in a tighter headlock. And occasionally a mommy catnap.

I am beyond fed up with having to wait until after 9pm for any sort of puttering/down time. How do I get her back on track and bring that bed time back to 7:30 or 8:00?

The only thing that works for us is no naps, which is woo’s pref anyway. Does music help? Could make her focus? Sorry – we are sleep challenged too.

I’m still kinda attached to those 2 hours on Sat/Sunday afternoon and she’s a mess if she doesn’t nap…I’m talking about V now *g*

Haha – perfect! My co-workers now think I’m a nutcase.

C'mon, tell me what you think. You know you want to!
