Change it is a-comin’

There are a few things you should probably know about my husband before I continue. The first is that he hates getting his picture taken. This leads to a tonne of pictures where he is either sticking his tongue out at me or flipping me the bird. The other option (which suits my purposes completely today!) is that I sneak pics of him when he’s not looking.

The second is that he is intensely private. He hates having a fuss made over him, people paying attention to him, and surprising to no one, me blogging about him.

And, I’ve left the best for last, he has a heart of gold. In a textbook example of the book not matching the cover, he’s a huge softie and has only gotten more so since we’ve had V. Children have a direct line to his heart.

Hubby has had his hair longer than he’s known me. I know, you’re thinking duh, most guys have hair before they meet their wives (I said MOST). But I don’t just mean hair. I mean he started growing his hair out when he was 17 (this was the 80s remember. Rock and roll wooo!), and by the time I met him when he was 20 it was, as I like to describe it, ‘bra strap length’. He loves it when I do that, believe me.

So I’ve never known him with short hair and while it might have gone through a few styles, it is currently all one length and down to his butt. Don’t roll your eyes, it really is:

Needless to say it’s always easy to describe him. ‘Hey have you seen a guy about 6′ with hair down to his a$$?’ There aren’t too many of them wandering around Loblaws these days. It’s also a bit of a pain when he does things like ride his motorcycle or goes scuba diving. He hates having it knotted and you’d think he was Don King when I try to brush it out. At times like those he’s considered cutting it off, but it’s usually in passing. He’s always known that when he did cut it he would be donating it to a charity that made wigs for sick children and that he’d want to do a fundraiser as well.

This spring he received two pieces of information so close together he just knew the time had come. He found out that one of his co-workers has had to take an unpaid leave of absence to care for his gravely ill 8-year old daughter (you can read more about Jessica here [it’s now a cached version as the EMC doesn’t appear to have an online archive]) and coincidentally found out about a group of students who were donating their hair to Angel Hair, a charity that provides wigs to financially disadvantaged children who have lost their hair from alopecia, burns or cancer treatment, as well as other illnesses or treatments.

Originally he planned to donate his hair at the same time the students were, but then decided that he did not want to take away from their efforts. They had purposely grown their hair with the specific intent of donating it. He just happened to have hair and wanted to give it away. Instead, on June 29th at his department’s summer barbeque, he is having his hair cut. But not only is he having it cut, he is auctioning off the opportunity for anyone to cut his hair! Co-workers are fundraising and all of the money raised is going to Doug and his family.

I’ve never known him with short hair. I can’t imagine what he’ll look like or how it will be styled, but I do know that if at all possible I want to be one of the people who brings about the change and cuts his hair.

In what is quite possibly a crazy move, I’m going to donate a dollar for every comment left on this post. Go ahead, spread the word!
