SOC Sunday – reading

April 15, 2012

#SOCsunday

Today’s (Optional) Writing Prompt: Have you ever gotten so engrossed in a book that is seemed to spill over into your real life? Tell me about it.

———————————————–

I’ve always dived nose-first into the books I’m reading. Even today my family and friends are in trouble when I finally do find the time to read (DO NOT look at my Goodreads, I think I’ve read one book this year!) because I completely tune out everything around me.  I used to miss getting called to dinner, I was so busy helping Nancy, Beth and George find the bad guy. Then it was those Sweet Valley High twins, followed by the Flowers in the Attic series (seriously who wrote that? And why does her family keep writing it?) then a *whole* lot of Stephen King. I wasn’t helping anyone catch the bad guys there, I was just trying to stay alive!

Then it was the Dragonriders of Pern, then Robert Jordan captivated me with his Wheel of Time series…I can still remember so vividly returning from a family vacation, the plane making its final decent and me being jarred back to reality, realizing that the characters I’d just spent the past hours with weren’t real, that I was actually on a modern day, steel flying machine, there were no seals to be broken and the One Power wasn’t turning anyone mad. A landing and a let-down all in one.

These days I still ‘see’ the worlds of the books I’m reading, but chances are I’m not visiting their world. Even so, the movie in my head is ALWAYS better than the Hollywood version. (The only movie that has ever been close was Little Women.) That reminds me, I’ve got a few books I should go read…

I hardly like any book turned into a movie because what I have in my mind is so much better.

I’m the same way with books. I always dislike the movie because my visualizations are better than what I see in the movie.

I also went through a phase with the Sweet Valley series and Flowers in the Attic.

I love the idea for SOC Sunday. I might do one myself next week. 🙂 Good post.

I do love that Little Women movie – the ’90s one. But then again, I have a ginormous crush on Christian Bale*, so…books are always better. I always say that the book is the meal and the movie is a snack.

*I know, I know – the book says Laurie has curly black hair. But that’s a minor detail, right? It’s not like they changed Amy’s lemons into Pokemon cards or anything.

Yes – the movie in my head is ALWAYS better than the real thing. Sometimes it ruins it for me!

It’s also why I love reading scary books but HATE watching scary movies. I always do it better.

C'mon, tell me what you think. You know you want to!
