Tea, a gateway drug

May 22, 2012

Since V had a wonderful time last month when we went for tea at the Chateau Laurier, I knew she’d jump at the chance to go to another tea. I didn’t have to wait long to be proven right – last Saturday the Stittsville Sparks, Brownies, Guides and Pathfinders held a ‘Queen’s Royal Tea‘ and she could not wait to go. She was especially pleased that dressing up was encouraged and did her best with her gold skirts and sparkles and heels (and more than one item of mommy’s jewellery).

Surprisingly we didn’t know anyone there (seems that was a timing issue as several friends have mentioned they also attended), but V had a wonderful time both practising drinking while holding her pinkie in the air and shopping at the coincident craft sale. She’s an equal-opportunity shopper that one – she needed to buy something from every table…at least I got a new felt cellphone case out of the deal.

But we weren’t content to just sip some (nicely brewed) tea, and munch a few sandwiches, I’ve also set myself up for my next two challenges. V will just under the age limit for Sparks next fall, but will be in SK so the organizers agreed she can join. And she seems very interested. (Her interest was especially piqued after we passed the local Baden-Powell firepit last week *g*) Apparently Sparks registration around these parts is somewhat akin to registering for swimming lessons with the City of Ottawa. You’ve got to be on the ball the minute the web registrations open or else you’re stuck with Monday at 7:30 (sigh) out of luck. So June 1st. Big circle in the calendar. Obviously I’ll fall asleep 2 minutes before registration opens.

Challenge two will actually be the participation. There are badges on the line man! Hmm, with all these teas I wonder if there’s a fascinator badge she can earn?

I am not sure what sparks it like but when I registered M for Beavers last year I had to race in and fill everything out 100 miles an hour. Find out everything you need (cheques, ID) and pre fill in as much as you can. If you can get a hold of the forms ahead of time that will save you time. I know it sounds crazy but there are only limited spots (especially on popular nights, we wanted Wednesday). That being said. M doesn’t like Beavers so the pressure was off us this year. We didn’t register and he is out for next year.

It was CRAZY! Although I’ve heard that once you’re in, the re-registration is great, we’ll just see if we can make it through the year first *g*
