SOC Sunday: What do I want to be when I grow up?

September 23, 2012

Wow, it’s been a few weeks since I’ve done one of these.

Today’s (optional) prompt: How did you settle on your major/career choice?

Funny thing is I never really decided on a career choice (and my major? let’s not go there). I started working as a receptionist for a small (I was employee #21) software company when I was 20. I then did some AA work for them, worked in their library, moved to purchasing, did some facilities stuff, ended up (because I don’t know when to shut up) becoming a UNIX admin, worked on the help desk, managed the help desk (somewhere in there they got bought by a HUGE company) and then somehow I got tricked into working in IT security and compliance (with a side of PMing for good measure). And that’s where I sit today.

I’ve been doing this job in one form or another for seven or so years, the longest I’ve ever stayed in one position (even though I’ve been with the ‘company’ for 22 years!) and that really just seems far too long for me. It actually makes me sort of itchy. I just don’t know where I want to go next, and for the first time ever, it looks like I’ll actually have to make a decision rather than something just falling in to my lap.

We have similar career trajectories. I was hired to a small company 17 years ago, then we were bought out by big company 14 years ago. I am still here. Have held 4 different positions and have been in this last one for almost 10 years. Now I want to change careers. It’s time.

C'mon, tell me what you think. You know you want to!
