The Wiggles need a warning label

October 17, 2012

The Wiggles shimmy-shook their way through Ottawa yesterday for 2 shows on their “Celebration: Wiggles” tour. This will be the last show for Sam  Greg, Jeff and Murray. After 21 years they’re retiring from the show and tour to work behind the scenes. After they performed the first  few songs  they started reading some of the signs being held up by their adoring fans; some of which wished them farewell. Murray then made a comment about their retirement and noted that they’d only be a DVD away *g*.  They also introduced the new Wiggles (and a new song!) a bit later on.

After listening and dancing to many of our favorites (is it wrong that I know the words to all their songs?) it was time to say goodbye. One by one the characters left the stage, until only Jeff, Murray and Sam Greg were left. After their farewell, they hopped into the Big Red Car one last time and drove away.

Then the house lights came up and all hell broke loose. Kids started BAWLING everywhere I looked. It really shouldn’t have come as a surprise, I mean the boy band of the toddler set had just announced they were breaking up (or breaking a hip – those dudes are old! Look at the grey hair on Jeff *g*). But not my V. Nope she was sad the show was over, thrilled with her Dorothy stuffy and Dorothy shirt, excited to tell her classmates the next day and talking about the Wiggles DVDs she’d watch when she got home.

Seems painless right? I thought so too. Fast-forward to 11pm (several hours after Miss V fell asleep) and she wakes up *sobbing*, just heartbroken that she’d never see ‘Wake up Jeff‘ in person again. An hour and a half later, she finally fell back to sleep. Yes, an hour and a half spent crying about the Wiggles, begging to play on the iPad, then back to the heartbreak. (I can’t guarantee I didn’t fall asleep before she finally settled)

I fear her teenage years.

Wow, I’m glad we skipped it – I love their concerts and was going back and forth about pulling the kids from school for it. I’m sure we would have had some sobbers on our hands, too! Hope V is okay :).

She loved the show, but ya, the sadness was totally unexpected. She seems okay now, but we haven’t really mentioned it again. *tiptoes*

The Yellow Wiggle that you saw last night was GREG, the original and one of the founding members and creators of The Wiggles. His voice is the signature sound of the group, and he has been the face of the group for 17 of their years. It’s an understatement to say that he is going to be terrifically missed. As for breaking a hip, Greg just turned 40 this year, so I wouldn’t place him in the really old category. The grey hair he sports has been with him since he was a teenager. The shows are quality entertainment, full of energy, laughter and songs. Who could ask for more for your kids? These guys are one of a kind. Thank you for everything – Jeff, Murray, Anthony and Greg!

Thanks, I’ve updated it! (I knew that too, but I had Sam stuck in my head after seeing one episode recently where I realized Sam, Anthony and Murray were dancing with their initials on their shirts and it spelled SAM *g*)

As for the old comment – I’m both older and greyer than they are, and I wouldn’t want to be doing the dancing and flipping they do either. It was a joke.
