I thought I paid taxes for that…

November 4, 2011

V’s been in school for 2 months now, and in that time we’ve received the following requests to fork over cash:

  • class pictures – this one I expected, and the prices seemed reasonable
  • id cards – some bs scare tactic they sent home trying to get us to get these ID kits made (guess where I stand on this one!)
  • magazine sales – they weren’t really clear on this, they gave no date as to when to return it, but there’s a whole catalog of magazines I can subscribe to and then never read. And maybe I’m supposed to guilt friends, family and neighbours into buying them too, as there appeared to be a whole laundry list of crap that V could win if ‘she’ sold a certain type or volume of the rags.
  • movie night – where we’d get to sit on the gym floor in our pjs. Right, I’m too old for that, after 2 hours on a wooden floor I’d seize right up.
  • book fair – this was actually tacked on to the meet the teacher night. It felt very much like exiting through the gift shop.
  • french book fair – yet another plea for some wonderful service that they’d no longer be able to provide if I didn’t fork over some cash.
  • popcorn – I had a really hard time with this one. I see it as the slippery slope to them selling her all sorts of pizza and hot dog crap lunches on one hand, and on the other I didn’t want her to be the only kid that didn’t eat the popcorn. So I caved. And she didn’t eat the popcorn with her class, she brought it home (this month) to her dad. And as I suspected, there was only one kid that didn’t get popcorn in the whole class. Next year there will be two.
  • buy a muffin for…um I can’t remember what program they’re supporting (this one gets better, see below)
I’ve also been asked to:
  • bake muffins – yes, the very ones they’re now going to sell to me? I’m baking a dozen for them to sell.
  • do some reading – once or twice a month head in and read to the kids or organize activities
  • help the milk program – once a week, hand out milk for the milk program, or monitor a lunch room
  • make playdoh – make a batch for the class. I think I signed up for doing this in March.

Can’t wait until they ask me to pay for a kindergarten ‘graduation’ cap and gown. It ain’t going to be pretty.

EDIT – Just to make me lose my ever lovin’ mind, they sent home the cookie dough fundraiser forms yesterday. My daughter has been in school for 8 full weeks and we have received 9 requests for money. NINE!
Don’t get me wrong, I know these aren’t all fundraising for the school, but the sheer volume of requests for money is insane.

11/16/11 EDIT2 – This week brought TWO more requests for money – Monday was money for Clementine in the classroom (since apparently they want to do this fundraising one dollar at a time and today was ‘spirit wear’. These are both fundraising. No specific goal in mind, and the Parent’s Council meeting minutes don’t really indicate what the money is for. This will need follow up for sure.

11/17/11 – Our 3rd request for money THIS WEEK, 12th over all:

And then my head exploded

11/21/11 – First request for money this week, good ole’ #13. And this one is a free fair. So again, we have to donate the ‘new or gently used’ items/crap and then send in $1 for V to select something.

11/21/11 – I should also note that all these requests do not include the scholastic books catalogs that come home every month – so there’s another 3 requests.

Ugh, us too – our school has a lunch program three days of the week, on top of having to pay a fee for school supplies, the dreaded magazine fundraiser, and plenty of sales and special events. On the plus side, most of the money raised went for things like field trips and books for the classroom, so that’s all good. STILL.

I don’t think I’d mind the food programs so much if they weren’t things like pizza and hot dogs. They do all these healthy eating campaigns then offer questionable food. Seems to be a mixed message

Please say it’s a joke that there is kindergarten graduation. Between talk of bullying and the list you’ve posted, I’m just about convinced I want to run away to the mountains and home school. (Okay, maybe not the mountains part, but you get the idea.)

We’re still seriously considering private school. At least they get your money all at once *g*

we have been so lucky!! other than the playdoh and school pictures (which I think are crazy expensive!) we’ve been asked to make something to contribute to the pot-luck for volunteers that are coming in to reno the gym. i’m game with that! fingers crossed that it doesn’t get worse!

    good luck!

Lucky! I really didn’t realize how many requests came in until I started this post – I’d even forgotten a few.

Ahhhh the “deer in the headlights” look of new parents when faced with school fundraising onslaught!
Yes it is too much. Yes a lot of it is questionable in terms of it being compatible with family purchases.
Sadly it’s needed. The provincial funding formula is a joke.Ask your principal about the school budget and I’ll bet your head will spin around.Once a school is up and running there is very little money to maintain the basics. In the years my children have been at their elementary school (8) we have raised $ for a computer lab, gym equipment, BOOKS…. These are not “extras”, we are not fundraising for enriched programs.

Hey Charlene, there are several requests that we’ve received that aren’t for basics, or even for the school. I agree a lot is needed (and I should disclose that my husband works for the school board so I’m familiar with the formula (and cynical)

See, now this is a perfectly good reason not to have kids! This makes number 787 on my list of reasons. Yes, I can hear the cacaphony of voices now saying, oh but they enrich your life, oh it is different when they are yours, oh they are a blessing! Uh huh, it also bankrupts you, sucks the life out of you and deprives you of any meaningful sleep for decades. Sigh. See now I rant. I feel very sorry for parents these days. Everything is expensive, rushed and plugged-in. Where was I? Oh yeah…money. I understand that schools have it bad with budgets these days, but holy crow! You should add up each year what it costs you and keep track, just for kicks and giggles on this blog. Have a running total of what the Provincial government owes you. I guess this wouldn’t be a good time for me to mention that although I don’t have children I do have to pay school taxes too…but it takes a village to raise a child…right!!!???!!!!!! So what is our school taxes paying for?

lol. Where were you and that list 4 years ago! Or hey even 10 years ago when we started treatment?
As for the school costs, I’d be afraid to tally up what it costs… and maybe hope she’s either a child prodigy or dropout.

Ha, I am liking the private school option so far – no requests for fundraising, a wack of field trips, they come home with souvenirs, AND they get fed at school. I am pretty sure that the school is still coming out ahead though. 🙂

C'mon, tell me what you think. You know you want to!
